MusicRadar is part of Future plc, an international media group and leading digital publisher. When Korg introduced the Minilogue in 2016 it was a game-changer. Notably, the presets are also decent and there are eight 'favourite' locations for quickly recalling patches, too. A comprehensive redesign, such as no other synth, meant for usage in the studio, at home, or live on stage. "The Minilogue is unmistakably Korg-sounding (almost like a polyphonic MS-20 at times), though it's warmer/deeper and more refined, whilst simultaneously sounding edgy/progressive.". We check over 130 million products every day for the best prices. The Minilogue is much cheaper than many of the four–voice analogue/digital hybrids from elsewhere, and it can sound great. Unfortunately, there seems to be a problem with the sync when used with certain combinations of pitches, pitch sweeps and waveforms. The contents of this article are subject to worldwide copyright protection and reproduction in whole or part, whether mechanical or electronic, is expressly forbidden without the prior written consent of the Publishers. Instead, there's a sprung and centre-detented angled slider which can be assigned to 29 destinations including pitchbend, filter and LFO, though only one destination at a time currently. Also available is a chunky-sounding white noise oscillator (which comes in handy for making sound effects and snares) and a single, MIDI-syncable LFO that's capable of audio-rate modulation. There are 14 metal 'paddle' switches (like a '70s music centre/'80s video recorder!) Next to these lie 3.5mm Sync In and Out sockets and, to the left of these, you’ll find standard five–pin MIDI In and Out connectors plus a USB ‘B’ socket that carries MIDI but not audio. Despite these limitations, I was surprised to discover how flexible the Minilogue can be, although there are several things that I might have done differently had I been one of its designers. Amazing quality for its price. I’m therefore impressed with Korg’s innovative Voice Modes which, while not going as far as permitting multitimbral use, extend the possibilities of the Minilogue far beyond those of a simple four–voice polysynth with a Unison button. Notably, when MIDI-clocked from our DSI Tempest/Logic, the Minilogue's timing was rock solid. Built-in delay and arp/sequencer. Its non–standard MIDI CC map means that you can’t easily use it with other devices. Not only does it mean that the Minilogue has no sustain function, it means that, when you use the mod wheel or its equivalent on any standard synth connected to it, you just add a large amount of unwanted noise to the patch! We also found the envelopes to be pleasingly snappy (perfect for punchy leads, basses and drum sounds) and the second ADSR can be used as a general envelope and assigned to the filter and/or other parameters including LFO rate/intensity. New analogue engine with versatile and powerful-sounding VCOs and filter. I conducted most of this review with the Minilogue perched on the laptop extension of an Arturia KeyLab 88 MIDI controller, which would have worked perfectly had Korg’s engineers not chosen to ignore the standard MIDI CC map and substitute new destinations for every controller. Either way, it’s clearly designed as a stepping stone between the mini and pr… We feel that the idea of a ‘go to’ master synth is less relevant today (although there is a place for that too), and the Minilogue at this price and polyphony is not really about that. Don't miss the latest deals, news, reviews, features and tutorials. I checked that I hadn’t done anything stupid (I hadn’t) so I inspected the Minilogue’s CC list. This finishes off the Minilogue's future/retro vibe nicely. The delay line itself offers just delay time and feedback gain controls, so it’s equivalent to the simplest stompboxes and single–head tape delays. The filter can also be velocity controlled/keyboard-tracked and has 2- and 4-pole modes which have nicely different resonant characteristics, adding much to the overall versatility. I was stunned. Consequently, the Minilogue has the potential to own the lower-midrange poly-analogue keyboard market. You will receive a verification email shortly. There’s nothing stopping you from invoking these in any combination, although, even with extreme settings, everything remains well behaved — in the area of useful sound effects rather than sonic mayhem. The success of Korg’s original minilogue synthesizer, released back in 2016, proved two things: 1. You may not wish to use its ‘slim’ keyboard. The keys remain ‘slim’ or ‘mini’ in size, and run the len… At around £435$499 (the projected price at the time of writing), the Minilogue is attractively priced and, if it satisfies your needs, possibly offers the best price/performance ratio. Is Ultrasonic Noise On DSD Recordings A Problem? and 29 black plastic dials on the panel. There are three places from which you can tap the audio from this section. Connection-wise, the Minilogue runs off a wall-wart (expected at the price point) plus there's a full-size mono-jack output (use the headphone out to run split-mono/pseudo-stereo) a mono audio input which runs through the filters, envelopes and delay too (fantastic news!) In 2016 Korg released the Minilogue, their first polyphonic analogue synth since the ‘80s.This compact four-voice synth won popularity thanks to sounding superb and being inexpensive. Nonetheless, the oscillator section is more powerful than you might expect because it offers cross modulation (FM) and oscillator sync (both with VCO2 as carrier and VCO1 as modulator), plus a ring modulator, the output of which uses the VCO2 input in the mixer so that you can combine the signal from VCO1 with the output from the modulator. The pots remain black, but could still use a white line to indicate position, which I think would have set it off a treat. Perhaps concerned for the UK and its shrinking pound, they chose the latter. You can direct just one from a list of 29 parameters to this, ranging from pitch–bend and various oscillator, filter and contour settings, to things such as the delay time or feedback amount, or Voice Mode Depth. How are ratings calculated? Game-changer? But as I extended the complexity of my sounds, the characters of the two instruments started to diverge from one another. Well, now we have the answer and it's called the Minilogue - an all-new, 4-voice analogue polysynth priced at less than £500. We're not sure how Korg has pulled this off for the price but the company has nailed it. At ANR we couldn't help but following the recent KORG Minilogue's release with a rush of excitement. The control panel is extremely intuitive. It doesn’t display the waveform at the synth’s output, but rather (and perhaps more usefully) the output from the most recently played voice, which is then scaled to fit the screen no matter the frequency of the note. The standout features of the Korg Minilogue. Overall, this year has brought us some very powerful synths, such as our recently reviewed Arturia MicroFreak. by Korg. When Korg introduced the Minilogue in 2016 it was a game-changer. So why do it? Each voice offers two VCOs plus white noise, a low–pass VCF and an audio VCA, all modulated by a digitally generated LFO and shaped by dual, digitally generated ADSR envelopes. The Korg Minilogue is a 4 Voice Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer. Facebook Twitter WhatsApp “With the Minilogue, Korg have set a new benchmark.” Greg Scarth falls in love with Korg’s new analogue synth. Unfortunately, you can’t apply LFO–driven waveshaping to one oscillator and not the other, which precludes patches that mix sawtooth and PWM waves for ensemble sounds, and you can’t use the LFO to modulate the pitch of one oscillator but not the other, which precludes many chorus patches. On the other hand, it offers only a miniature keyboard and incorporates an, um... ‘misguided’ MIDI implementation. Everything works as specified, but why was it specified that way? Please refresh the page and try again. Q. The Minilogue’s (surprisingly few) sockets are all to be found recessed into the wooden rear panel. There are three keyboard tracking modes (0, 50 and 100 percent) and three velocity modes (also called 0, 50 and 100 percent), the latter of which affect the cutoff frequency directly, not the amount by which the contour generator is applied. "It's a good job there are 200 locations to store your patches and sequences. Modulation-wise, there's loads to mess-up or subtly massage sounds, including the audio-rate-capable LFO with three waveshapes, cross-mod, ring-mod, shape-mod, PWM, sync, pitch-mod, the assignable EG and white noise - all of which can be tweaked directly via the panel (or via MIDI). Wrapping up our Korg Minologue XD synthesizer review. Absolutely. There's also a square wave sub-oscillator available in Mono Mode (via the Voice Mode Depth dial) which sits one or two octaves below Osc 1. However, unlike the Oddy, the Minilogue is velocity-sensitive, though it doesn't receive or transmit aftertouch. It's unmistakably Korg-sounding (almost like a polyphonic MS-20 at times), though it's warmer/deeper and more refined, whilst simultaneously sounding edgy/progressive. Weigh the negatives in a review against a newer review … Then I discovered how to load the current panel settings into the edit buffer and started to program various monophonic patches from scratch, and was overtaken by an overwhelming urge to compare these with the same sounds produced by my four–voice Korg Mono/Poly. Intuitive hands-on control panel. Adding a second oscillator on the Mono/Poly and selecting Duo mode on the Minilogue reinforced the similarities, although this was one area in which the vintage synth demonstrated its occasional superiority by allowing me to mix PWM with other waves. These include things such as the sync modes of the LFOs (which determine whether the four voices are locked to each other and/or the sequencer), the portamento, and whether MIDI velocity affects the loudness of the sound. And, while the assignable EG can affect the LFO rate and intensity, it can only control one of these at a time. Build Quality - Build is excellent for the price, with an aluminum top panel, chassis-mounted metal shaft pots, a sustainable wood rear panel, and a tiny but high-contrast OLED screen with delivers a striking and useful oscilloscope display. You can also record up to four motion sequences (sequences that contain changes to one of the top-panel control values) within each Program. Minilogue is an interesting beast, a decent enough old-school analogue synth with a good set of modern, digital features that make it much easier to live with than Korg's other analogue offerings. The bend range can be set independently either side of centre, and you can easily perform very fast/fluid/accurate pitch wobbles and bends with it. For example, there are some hidden functions accessed using the Shift key, so I would have silk–screened them on to the panel. Sequence/note length and gate time can all be customised and there's adjustable swing, too. The Minilogue even gives more expensive synths a serious run for their money, and is pretty much an essential purchase. The views expressed are those of the contributors and not necessarily those of the publishers. Couple all this to the onboard 16-step polyphonic sequencer, the arpeggiator, the aforementioned audio input for processing external audio, the very tape-like delay, plus patch storage and MIDI, and the Minilogue will surely fly off the shelves- you have to keep reminding yourself how reasonably priced it is is and just how much goodness it packs into its compact form factor. In most cases this isn’t an issue, but on some patches — and in particular on some sync’ed sounds where you use the assignable EG to control the pitch of VCO2 — you’ll notice that there’s a cusp as the Decay stage progresses into the Sustain phase. Minilogue XD is a souped-up Minilogue, as that synth remains at its core – hence the name – although it should also be considered as a cut-down Korg Prologue, too, as it features many of that synth’s extras and flavours. To follow the popular four-voice Minilogue synth, Korg could have gone either way — larger or smaller. The operations of some of these modes are obvious — for example, Poly is the four–voice polyphonic mode, Unison plays all four voices under a single key, and Arp invokes the arpeggiator. As we mentioned earlier, this device comes with four independent voices. Polyphonic Analogue Synthesizer 200 fully editable presets Modes: Poly, Duo, Mono, Chord, Unison 16-step poly note and motion sequencer Super flexible 4-voice analog synthesizer with 2 oscillators per voice, switchable 2-/4-pole lowpass filter, onboard tape-delay emulation, 16-step sequencer, 8 voice modes, and MIDI an Sort by. Write a review. Named after one of techno’s most prolific analog producers, Korg’s original Minilogue was released to rave reviews and much fanfare. It would seem sensible. First things first: the Minilogue is a single–channel, mono–timbral, four–voice analogue/digital hybrid polysynth with various duophonic and monophonic options. While they are for obvious reasons more affordable than analogue synths with more voices, they have too many oscillators for a single monophonic synth, and too few voices for anything but the simplest polyphonic uses. However, I suspect that sales will be rather more hampered by its miniature keyboard and limited performance capabilities than Korg would wish. You may login with either your assigned username or your e-mail address. In recent years, the Kaoss products, the Monotron and the announcement of the Korg ARP Odyssey all caught the world unawares and, although industry watchers sniffed something in the air when the company trademarked the Minilogue name in 2015, none of the ensuing speculation (or, at least, none at the time of writing) foresaw what you now see before you. Top reviews. Nonetheless, it’s capable of a range of quasi–reverberant effects as well as standard echoes and delays. A standard keyboard spanning a little over two–and–a–half octaves (C to G) is almost exactly the same width as Korg’s three–octave slim keyboard and, for me, that would be by far the better choice. But my biggest issue with the Minilogue is its MIDI implementation. 3 0 . You'll also have noticed that there are no pitch and mod wheels. As for using the Minilogue to control other MIDI keyboards or modules, let’s just say that it’s not going to be straightforward! (The keys, not the widdly solos.) The audio is then passed to the output section, which comprises an analogue high–pass filter combined with a digital delay line and its associated feedback loop. The Attack, Decay and Release stages on most analogue synths tend to be curved, which results in smooth transitions from one stage of the contour to the next. What Does it offer ? Reassuringly, for general sound making and sequencing you don't need the screen at all - just your ears/fingers! Power on the Minilogue and you're greeted with a 'tuning' screen whilst the oscillators warm up, and the Minilogue is ready to go and stable in about 10 seconds (you can even play a little game of on-screen bat and ball as you wait)! Although many manufacturers are now using miniature keybeds, I put this question to Korg and they responded, “It’s a form factor that’s increasingly compatible with a lot of studio environments with less space. Introduces sub–oscillators one and two octaves below the fundamental. It's been a long time since I was this surprised/inspired by a synth and we're sure it's going to stir things up in the synth world. Lastly, there’s an input for the wall–wart, a cable hook, and an on/off switch. The included high-pass filter is also very welcome, winding out lows from the delay repeats (or the Minilogue's overall output) and we love that delay tweaks can be sequenced, too. The minilogue is really fast and it can be used to explore and implement real analog synthesis in any situation. The shaping applied to the pulse wave is simple to explain: it’s pulse width when controlled by the knob, and PWM when controlled by the LFO, and it generates the usual range of sounds. Yet more provide vital parameters for the sequencer including the length, swing, and gate time. When enabled, velocity affects the amplitude of the ADSR contour applied to the VCA gain, as it should. Selects from a set of predetermined chords. Well-built yet very portable and compact. Win! All rights reserved. Delay Mode allows each voice to be triggered in turn, with VMD varying the delay between voices. We hope Korg can implement an OS update asap so that you can assign a separate destination to each side of the slider's centre position for quick-flipping between pitch/mod duties. The Minilogue is a four-voice polysynth that opens up a world of powerful analogue sounds, Korg have packed a lot of features into this mini-synth, making it versatile for both beginners and experienced synth musicians. I’ll leave it to Korg’s marketing department to come up with equivalents. The Minilogue’s front panel measures 50 by 30 cm. Alternatively, you could also consider a low–cost MIDI controller and one or two of the recent Roland Boutique modules, which offer several benefits at the expense of substituting a virtual analogue synth engine for a true analogue signal path. Many of Korg’s vintage analogue synths allowed you to apply pitch–bend (left/right) and two types of modulation (forward/backward) to a sound, and it’s a shame that the Minilogue doesn’t do likewise. Korg has been working to keep it updated so a lot of the annoying bugs get fixed with each version of the firmware. I would also have tried to devise a mechanism to enable users to jump directly to a given patch without using a MIDI message (currently, you can only save eight favourites or step through the memory in increments of one or 10), and I would have attempted to include a software LFO to modulate the delay time for basic chorus and flanging effects. The Minilogue is just so inspiring.". Unison stacks all the voices together for a massive sound (great for trance/electronica), again with detuning via the VMD dial. Discussion: Active. All the oscillators sou… Many of these have obvious uses: master tuning, naming patches, MIDI and sync parameters, local on/off, how the knobs respond, and so on. As already mentioned, the Minilogue has 4 voices, so you can play up to 4 notes simultaneously. With its swept control panel and the almost obligatory lump of wood acting as a rear-panel decoration (rather than the usual end-cheek or two), it’s one of the most distinctive small synths of recent years, and possibly one of the most attractive. The sequencer is a handy ideas scratchpad and an addictive evolving looper too, particularly when you start recording dial (motion) tweaks. The results were fascinating. The front panel is fashioned from 2mm sand-blasted anodized silver aluminium, which feels tough and is nicely contoured/textured, whilst the chassis is constructed from tough/lightweight plastic with a Pyinkado wood back panel (a South Asian tree known to have very durable properties). Korg made the Mini provide users the ability of polyphonic analog for a low price. The KORG Minilogue is a 4 Voice, Polyphonic Synthesizer created by Engineer Tatsuya Takahashi over at KORG in Tokyo, Japan. You can make deep, subby and growling basses, a great Wurlitzer-style EP, wah Clav's, rich evolving pads, cutting leads, huge stacked unison sounds and MS-20-style FX and bleeps. You’re going to become intimately acquainted with these menus, so I find myself wondering whether Korg will release an editor/librarian. Initially eschewing complexities such as cross modulation and sync, I was able to create all manner of single–oscillator patches on each that were remarkably similar to one another. Reviews » Gear/Software » Korg Minilogue Korg Minilogue. Power on the Minilogue and you're greeted with a 'tuning' screen whilst the oscillators warm up, and the Minilogue is ready to go and stable in about 10 seconds (you can even play a little game of on-screen bat and ball as you wait)! In addition, each wave has a continuously variable (and modulatable) shape, making the Minilogue a surprisingly powerful/versatile sonic toolbox. What’s more, with a maximum feedback gain of a tad greater than unity, you can generate all manner of ’50s sci–fi effects. The korg minilogue is a four-voice polyphonic true-analog synth. In fact, it's scary how so many different types of sound just drop out of the Minilogue with little effort, and it's a good job there are 200 locations to store your patches and sequences. Last but not least, the characterful delay is indispensable, and can add reverb-like ambience and/or distorted atmospherics. All rights reserved. Korg Minilogue XD 4-Voice Analog Synthesizer Module. In fact, the Minilogue feels more 'premium' than many of the more expensive synths we've tested recently! Korg Minilogue Editor by Ctnr Audio is a Virtual Instrument Audio Plugin and a Standalone Application for macOS and Windows. This was a synthesizer that was highly awaited, and it did not disappoint. There was a problem. The Minilogue is just so inspiring. Finally, Sidechain Mode lowers the volume of any already-played voice when a new one is triggered - there's plenty to work with and it's certainly fun switching between the modes during live performances, too. If they do, keep your fingers crossed for a ‘pro’ version. plus USB (MIDI only), full-size DIN Midi In and Out and Sync In/Out minijacks for interfacing with other Korg Sync-equipped gear (along with other third-party equipment that can read or send 5V pulse signals). Whether you're a fan of downsized keybeds or not, it's fast/enjoyable to play, and when you consider that the Minilogue will fit into a very compact case that you can easily take onto a plane as hand luggage, any reservations about it are soon firmly quashed - this will likely be the perfect form factor for many gigging/touring synth players. For example, CC1 (modulation amount) is directed to noise level, CC2 (breath control) is directed to VCO1 pitch, CC7 (volume) is directed to VCO1 level, CC64 (sustain) is directed to VCO1 octave, CC65 (portamento on/off) is directed to VCO2 octave, and so it goes on. If you exlucde Akai's 2-octave, 4-voice Timbre Wolf at £299, we can't think of another analogue synth at a similar price point that offers this facility There's a significant jump in price up to DSI's Mopho X4, the Elektron Analog Keys and the Roland JD-XA (all DCO, not VCO). Ranked in these Questions Question Ranking #1. Filter by. Arp Mode turns on the 14-mode arpeggiator (MIDI-syncable but currently not latchable). Regardless, the slider is very expressive. Selects inversions of the chords that you play on the keyboard. On the other hand, the Minilogue would have stepped way beyond the Mono/Poly had I chosen to invoke its triangle and sawtooth waveshaping. The cutoff control boasts the largest knob on the panel, and there are additional controls for the amount of resonance and the amount and polarity by which the assignable EG affects the cutoff frequency. However, there’s no Hold function for the audio VCA, so drones and some other treatments won’t be possible without holding down a key or running the sequencer. All reviewers. Add to Wish List. I’ve never been quite sure about mono–timbral four–voice synths. The FX are in the same kind of league as the Minilogue XD - and we recognized several algorithms from that including the Riser and Submarine shimmer reverbs. Duo Mode turns the Minilogue into a 2-voice poly, with 2 oscillators per key played and detuning via the VMD dial. The Minilogue is the first and more significant of the two synthesizers using 37 slim-sized keys. You can invoke the auto–tune routine to keep them in tune and scaled but, once they’ve drifted a little, you can create some nice, eerie patches, just as on vintage synths with the same facilities.
